Headteacher's welcome

Welcome to St Mary's Voluntary Controlled Church of England Primary School Banbury. We are proud to be at the very heart of the town. We are oldest school in the town with foundations back to 1705 as a Blue Coat School. We serve a diverse community, with pupils from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and religious traditions. We know that our unique blend of tradition, care, education and moral guidance helps our pupils, staff and families to live in harmony and succeed in all they do. We all 'Aim High and Use the Gifts God Gave Us'.

There are 7 classes and our Nursery pupils with 220 currently on roll. We provide a curriculum through our Creative Learning Journey which includes daily phonic, Literacy and Mathematical learning as well as cross curricular project led activities. All our children's learning is enriched by specialist music and sports teaching and weekly Outdoor Learning opportunities. We currently offer a variety of sporting activities outside school hours with football, cricket and dance just some of the recent offers as well as a Change 4Life club supporting a variety of pupils' needs for socialisation, out of school activity and physical exercise.

Ofsted, Oct 2016...
'The quality of teaching and learning has improved noticeably over the last year'

Our school day starts with our fun and lively 'Wake Up Shake Up Breakfast Club'. Our learning is enriched by our continual development of new places and ways to learn. Hidden away we have our beautiful green space with trim trail, outdoor learning area and Early Years Foundation Stage outdoor provision area. All children learn outdoors at least once a week as part of the curriculum and we are developing our professional expertise to be able to offer a Forest Schools programme and to work in partnership with 'Skill Force' over the next academic year. Our classrooms are fully equipped with laptops for teachers and children, interactive whiteboards, a class set of i-Pads and a variety of other technology helping us to provide up-to-date, interactive and stimulating opportunities to lean about Computing and also, through the use of ICT in daily lessons, to equip our children with the skills needed for the modern world. We actively encourage learning away from school with regular visits to museums, theatre productions and outdoor adventures as well as offering opportunities for residential visits. During 2016-17 we will be extending this part of the curriculum to include pupils from Y3 upwards.

Outdoor Learning in Early Years and KS1
St. Mary's Church of England (VC) Primary School

Teachers, teaching assistants and parents work together to support the learning of all pupils. Regular formal and informal communication between home and school is encouraged and pupils and adults alike work together to identify the needs for each individual learner. Our Christian values; Compassion, Endurance, Truth, Koinonia and Creativity underpin all our activities and our positive behaviour policy ensures that good choices and hard work are well rewarded through 'SMART!' certificates, 'SMART SPOTS' and a weekly tea party with me. Children and families requiring additional support are well provided for with our Home School Community Link Worker and our Special Educational Needs Coordinator.

School is well supported by the Governing Board as well as through the Oxfordshire Diocese and the clergy serving St Mary's in Banbury. We take additional advice and support for the Banbury Primary School Partnership which encourages and supports both professional, sporting and educational links between all the schools in Banbury. We are helped to ensure the best possible outcomes for all learners through the support of the Local Authority schools services.

We would very much like to share our vision and enthusiasm for learning with you and welcome anyone interested in joining our school community to contact us to arrange a visit to school when you can meet myself, the teachers, support staff and most importantly, the children - who I am sure will be able to explain just how much fun learning at St Mary's is much better than I can!

I hope you enjoy your journey around our website and looking forward to welcoming you to school.
