Swifts - Year 5: How digestion works
In science, we have been learning about how our food moves through our bodies and is digested. We now know what the digestive organs are called and what they do. We can also tell you why we need a variety of healthy foods in our diets and how they are used by our bodies.
We did an experiment to demonstrate how digestion works. We used a bag for the mouth, and used our hands to chew up the food. The food was then transferred to the stomach, where gastric acid was added and the food was made even smaller. Then the food was moved into the intestines, and a pair of tights showed us how water is taken out in the large intestine but the food stays in there to be turned into poo.
